Yes, it's true disposable plastic bottles should only be used once, twice maybe. But no it's not the bacteria.
It's the Bisphenol A, a chemical used to make plastics. When these cheap disposable bottles are used more than they're intended to be used, they start to break down and this molecules can leech into the water.
To the body Bisphenol A looks like an estrogen molecule, but there's a problem because it's not really estrogen but an imposter and once it's 'plugs into' your estrogen receptor, it doesn't do the job that estrogen does. It's called generically a xeno-estrogen. (Xeno means foreign.)
BTW: Yes, even men have estrogen receptors and you don't want them messed with.
But you do have options. There are differnet grades of plastic. The higher the number the more durable it is. And it's easy to tell. The numbered grade is stamped right on the bottom of almost all bottles.
Your best bet is to buy a lexan polycarbonate bottle. That's the hard plastic. It has a #7 on the bottom of the bottle with a triangle shape around it (about $3-$7 at drug and discount stores). If you look at your disposable water bottle you'll find that same triangle shape symbol with a #1 on it which shows that it's not good for repeated use.The #7 is a lot more durable. And glass of course is the best.

I hope it's not true. I'd hate to fork over five bucks every time for a bike bottle. I've read that you can wash them with hot soapy water. I put mine in the dishwasher.
