my parents dog was the same way for a while/ they started putting a dog treat in the bowl with the food and now she eats from them just fine/ the funny thing now is that they have the bowl sitting on a plastic doggie mat when they feed her she picks up the bowl with her teeth and takes it off the mat and on the carpet right next to it, she will fill her mouth with food then carry it over by my parents feet and drop it and eat it one piece at a time/ now she is weird lol

I am not sure how tall your dog it, but it sometimes is hard for a dog to digest its food if they eat out of a bowl. Alot of people end up purchasing elevated stands for the dogs bowls to stand in. But if your dog eats off the floor, then that might be different. He might not like letting up his guard. Ma bey he is scared to eat while he can not see. Is the bowl covering up his line of vision? Once again the elevated bowls would help raise his vision.

My dog does this too, I think maybe its because its hard for them to eat just one bit at a time out of there dish, or maybe they dont like there nose bumping the sides? We've given up and we jus feed her on the floor. shes our lil vaccum :)

maybe you could try using like a biger dish, so the food isnt so crowed in it, a pie dish or a baking sheet, it would be worth trying

Think about it this way, if you had to eat your morning cereal without a spoon, would you rather try to stick your head in a cereal bowl? or would it be easier to eat off a plate?

dogs can be funny little things

My dog doesn't like drinking/eating out of metal bowls. I switched to ceramic and he doesn't have a problem. So, I guess my suggestion would be to switch the type of bowl he eats from.

One of my dogs refuses to eat dry food from his bowl.I have to sit on the sofa with him lying next to me facing the T.V.and feed him by hand one piece at a time.
And I have a friend whose dog refuses to eat unless she sits in the floor next to him while he does.
She thinks it's because he's afraid that if no one knows he's eaten they'll not think to let him out to go potty. If someones watching then they'll think to realize he soon has to go.
I think that our dogs just might not like to eat alone.
Why don't you try feeding him by hand or sitting next to him while he eats and see what happens? And as far as the water bowl goes-next time you go to the gas station grab a medium sized plastic cup from the soda fountain.Try filling it with water and offering your dog a drink from that while you hold it for him.
My shepherds think they're really all it when they get to drink from a glass like us.

probably afraid of them....does he wear a collar with dangling tags on it?

this happened to my dog her tags kept hitting the bowl and catching the side of the bowl and scared her. so i just took off her collar while she ate and she's fine now.
