thank you for all you answers, all of you make great points. I am currently a stay at home mom. however, am finding that if we want those little extras for our child then it may require an extra or part-time income as well. I am always curious to what other moms are doing to balance family and work! Thanks for your time!

I used to work for a financial planner, managing his client base from my home. That was fine until my son started talking, and then I had a hard time making any phone calls. It was inconvenient, because the work HAD to be done during work hours, and this doesn't always work well when you're also trying to raise your kids during those same hours.

Some of the home businesses popular with moms are the direct-sales things. You know- Creative Memories, Tastefully Simple, all the jewelry stuff, Tupperware... I dabble in Tupperware, but it only brings in about $12-15k a year, so it definitely doesn't replace my previous income. I have friends who make lots more, and some who lose money, in these endeavors. Before you decide to do anything, try to find someone who will tell you all the real details about what goes on. DON'T only listen to your "recruiter" because they'll just be adding you under them in the pyramid scheme, and you won't be getting as much honesty.

Personally, I like the Tupperware-type things because it's after hours most of the time (night parties, online orders, etc) so I don't feel like I'm stealing time from my kids. But I do get out and get to have some adult time, as well. I get my social fill, because I get to meet lots of different kinds and types of women. I can make it as busy or as laid-back as I want. If there is anything you really like (I LOVE Tupperware!!) then it's easy to want to go out and talk about it.

Hope that helps...

I work from home doing medical histories and transcription editing. I've actually had to hire in some help to do the actual interviewing of the patients since being on the phone up to an hour at a time with a 2 month old just wasn't working! I still type up all the reports and maintain contact with my clients.

I was fortunate enough to have fallen into a niche when I saw a need and was able to market myself and fill it. Working from home is definitely not for everyone. You have to be extremely organized and have a good work ethic. It's really easy to put things off and then you're suddenly slammed.

If you consider how much you would pay a sitter or child care provider, you're probably saving yourself a ton by staying at home, working or not!

I work 8hrs a day 5 days a week at a wear-house lifting heavy lino and carpet. Now I'm expecting my 2nd little one and I feel over worked and am trying to make it 8 months and then take a year matt leave. I have mixed feelings on going back to work. I enjoy my son to the fullest and try to always put him first. But I also like to work and have my own income. It's a hard world and now a days I see most of my friend as 2 income family's. I want to be safe and secure for my little ones and give them opportunities they deserve to have. Maybe I'll try working at home later on who No's unfortunately money doesn't grow on trees and some family's need both parents working. If your blessed to have a stay home life then by all means go for it.

I started out preparing Income tax returns at home. Then I learned through many of my clients that there are many businesses that need someone to do payroll and keep their books. I purchased accounting software (Quickbooks) and in a very short time I was doing computer generated accounting & payroll and during tax season--tax returns. It can be a very rewarding home-based business without a lot of start-up costs. The tax deductions are great for an office in the home because your clients come to you for your service! You can always check the Internet for your City & State rules for starting a business. It's a great learning experience, also. You can also use a digital camera to shoot photos. There are private schools, Day Care Centers, etc. who would love to sign a contract to have you come in and shoot class pics. You can set your quantity & price for your packets. Again, there's not a lot of $$ to start this type of business. Just download the pics from your digital camera to your computer and use Print Shop or another photo software Package to edit & set up your photos. I also made greeting cards, business cards, brochures, etc. using Print Shop. I've even done ad booklets for alumni Class reunions & senior citizens' birthday souvenir booklets. My experience is, if they like your work you'll never have to pay for advertisements--your customers are the best ads you'll ever need. They always come back, too. I hope this helps.

I baby sit and do scrapbooks on the side for a few extra dollars. I work from my house where I feel I should be. I love to stay at home with my son and working from home allows me to do so and if I want a few days/weeks off, I can do that because I am my own boss!

My wife saves us money by staying home. It has been estimated that if I payed a professional to do the jobs around the house that she does that I would owe a total of $300,000.00 per year to the various workers.
