My big toe has been swollen ever since last October, and 2 doctors I visited don't know what is wrong. It hurts when I lay down in bed, for about 15 minutes, almost 5 out of 7 days in the week. It is still swollen and the hurting is becoming more frequent. This is not a bunion. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

Nope, not ingrown toenails.

Well, the toenail is just like my fingernails in color, and isn't extremley short nor long. I think I might have hit it with a field hockey ball, but the x-ray showed what a normal toe should look like, bone and all.

Pain in a big toe, especially at night, is one of the symptoms of gout. But I would think that the doctors would have already considered that. Do make sure that you see a podiatrist if you haven't already. Go to the link below. Read the paragraph on symptoms and see if that sounds like your problem.

You need to see a posiatrist who is surgically trained and involved in his field. Have any doctor visits related to this sent to him; have all x-rays and such sent to him; make a list of ALL medication, vitamins, supplements, herbs, etc that you are taking; bring in the shoes that you most commonly wear or that seem to aggrivate the condition; and keep a diary of how much it hurts (scale of 1-10), when it hurts, what you did that day or the day before, what shoes you wore, etc.

It could be anything from a splinter that you don't know about to a circulatory issue to a tissue/bone/joint problem. Good luck to you in this. : )

your feet r really sensitive then.Try taking a bath in hot water.then after that put sum lotion on ur foot and scrub ur foot with a cloth until ur foot is completely clean...the reason why ur foot hurts is because it is not clean. do not wear a sock because all that absorbs inside the sock is bacteria..and that bacteria makes ur foot hurt....if u keep letting bacteria in ur foot, chances are u wont have a foot anymore..so wash it really good and relax like theres nothing wrong and in a couple days ur foot will feel better

It could be a bone spur. Did you injure it in any way?
