The real reason River Phoenix had a drug problems was the pressure he felt about constantly doing movies and making money to take care of both his parents and his siblings. At first, he just did it recreationally, but then he developed a habit for it. He would go sober while filming movies, and then get back into his drug habit. He died Oct 31, 1993 at age 23. His brother Joaquin was 19 yrs old at the time and had made the 911 call. They actually played the 911 call Joaquin made a few weeks after Rivers death, and they explained how he had did alot of cocaine and took a valium. Rivers parents were once members of a religious cult known as the church of David. There is controversy with this so called religious cult because kids have claimed to have been raped by adults and the leader. I do recall in one interview River Phoenix gave he claims that when he was 5 yrs old the leader and founder of the church of David had passed the law that god told him adults could have sex with kids. He claimed that he had lost his virginity at that age to an older women. It bothered him that he told his parents about the incident. They realized it was a false church and left sometime after. That could have had an effect on him and been a reason for his drug use as well.

You'll have to ask him directly, and I don't believe he's on Yahoo Answers.

Different people abuse drugs for different reasons; upbringing, career issues, relationship problems, poor self-confidence, trying to catch up, trying to slow down, trying to remember, trying to forget, trying to be cool, trying to be cooler, trying to be coolest...

But no matter why a person does drugs, those issues will still be there no matter if they're high or if they're straight. So we might as well face our problems sober and head-on, because they're not going to go away, eh?

i don't think it was his upbringing, coz look at his brother joquine, (i dunno how to spell it the 1 out walk the line), phoenix they were really close and hes turned out fine, i think river (haha on first name terms and all that) beacuse thats what was introduced to him with his fame, and he didnt see what harm could be done! ehh i can't belive hes dead, as if stand by me wasn't sad enough its now worse knowing the guys who dies in it who we all loved is actually dead himself now!
