I grew up with lots of pets then in grade 11 I developed allergies to cats, dogs, poodles, rabbits, etc. I had all those and didn't give up any. I took allergy pills occasionally but only when I realllly needed it. Over the years I got back my tolerance to cats and dogs (don't have a poodle or rabbits anymore) and have never been without them.

A breeder will not give you back your money just because you are allergic. If the dog became ill a day or so after you bought her, then you have the right to your money, ONLY if it is stated in your contract. otherwise, she is yours. If I spent that kind of money on a dog, (I never would), then I would see an Allergist, get the shots and pills needed, and keep the darn dog. Especially if you have fallen in love with it. It doesn't take long to love a dog.

I grew up with dogs and am also technically allergic them. However, we found that by keeping our home clean, I was able to avoid most of my symptoms.

A few things to note - it's not really the dog hair that you have the reaction to - it is typically one of the following items that is causing your symptoms: Animal Dander (skin flakes), Dog saliva (get red, itchy skin where dog licks you), or mites that live on the dog hair (breathe them in). You need to vacuum frequently with a good vacuum (don't forget the couches and chairs), wash your clothes and linens a lot, etc to try and manage your allergies. Also, find a good pet shampoo (I like the oatmeal ones at petsmart), and bathe your dog at least once a month. That will help as well. If the dog gets on your bed, make sure he/she stays off of your pillows. A night of breathing in allergens will make your symptoms much worse.

Let's see what others have to say, but keeping the house very clean is what worked for me.

Good luck.

Some breeders make you sign an agreement that if you do not wish to keep the dog, you must return it to them. However, unless it states that they will refund your money, you could be out of luck, unless it is a REALLY nice breeder. Some have a clause that only if the dog is found to be ill within x number of days of receipt, they will let you choose another dog from them, but not return the money. Anyways, if it is all hypothetical, then I guess if I was really concerned, I'd hypothetically test for allergies before hypothetically spending the money on the dog.

hypothetical???

Go to a doc and get an allergy test done now. Bring a strand of the dog's fur, too.

If you're allergic, ask the doc about the possibilities and costs associated with the meds. If you don't want to go on meds, don't ask for a refund. Just sell the dog to someone else yourself. Who knows, you might even make a profit.

ok, this doesn't really sound like a hypothetical question, but anyway, I would try to take the allergy medicine for a little while, if that's not something you're willing to do, then maybe you should SELL her, either back to the original owner, or to a loving home, that way you don't lose out on your money, and you know she'll be taken care of. I would do it as soon as possible, so she doesn't get too attached to you, and you don't get too attached to her, if you haven't already.

I don't understand how someone could be allergic to dogs and not have known it. Dogs are everywhere! But you're the only one who can decide if you wnat to take pills for the rest of your life. How important is this dog to you? If the money you spent is the real issue, find the dog another home.

You should decide quickly because if you're not keeping her, she needs to be in another home sooner rather than later.

I don't think you would be able to get your money back. Talk to your Dr. about the shots. Sometimes depending on the breed, they can even give your dog a pill to stop shedding.
