You will only be interviewed for a secret security clearance if your clearance requires a background investigation, or a special background investigation. Often, for a secret security clearance, and ENTNAC (Entrance National Agency Check) is all that is required.
Naturally, that can change on a case by case basis. For example, if they discover something you failed to mention on your background questionnaire, an investigator may come to you at some point to clarify whatever they discovered. What they are trying to determine is if you are reliable when it comes to sensitive information. If they believe that you are trying to conceal something, they will interview you and anyone else they feel a need to.
I've posted a link that goes into detail about how clearances are granted below:

i got my security clearance when i went to MEPS. before boot camp i had no interview after MEPS The clearance is usually good for about 5 years before you must be re interviewed. (just because you have a security clearance dosent mean you will ever know anything that is a "secret") alot of people get them without even knowing that they have one.

I have.
The investigation starts before you even leave. It took about 8 months for them to complete it.
I had an interview before I ever left for boot camp then another one months later. They talk to every freaking body so be warned... school teachers, friends, family, neighbors... they even travel to go see ppl. Like they went states away and popped up on a friend of mine who was away at college that had been my friend in high school.
Btw, when I say 'they', I am referring to the FBI. The FBI conducts the investigation.
I'm not sure how far they go for different levels. I only know about mine which was high due to attending Military Intelligence School. I'm sure they don't go that far for something like a MP or something. That is probably just your base background investigation that checks your credit history and criminal record.

depending on the security level that a person is going for, it can take months to get a clearance.
For very high levels they actually send real people to talk to your past neighbros and references, and then to people they mention. For mine they talked to every neighbor I lived next to for past 10 years and more.
They can start your clearance from the time you enlist.
Now your AIT will take a while, and it is possible that they would wait for you to go there, unless you need the clearance just to start training.
And remember everything you say to others, to your SGT and more may be questioned in the investigation also.

I want to say my top secret clearance was started early. I really don't remember. All I know is I had to have at least Top secret to do my job.

At basic training you should just have to fill out all the other forms. The only thing you will really here after that is if you got it or not.
