Yup, saves money, wear and tear of the machine run time, and saves you from having to worry about it catching fire.

If you want to save energy but would also like to resume work where you left it before shutting down, you can use the HIBERNATE feature of Windows.
HIBERNATE is better than stand by. Hibernate saved the current state of the computer on the hard drive and powers down everything. Next time you boot, everything is reloaded to where it was. It also boots faster this way than through a regular boot procedure.

Roger that! I always shut them off even though the price of oil has magically come down before Labor Day and continues to do so. The perception is that large undiscovered fields have suddenly been discovered. It looks like will we be back to Hummers, etc.

We did an experiment and with my dell at the time (2004) in energy saving mode it cost about 15cents per night (8hrs). It's worth the boot up time for me...sorry.

I leave the computer running so I can access it from work, but I always power down the monitor because I once saw one catch fire.

Always shut it down when you leave it untended. The power supply can over heat do to a faulty fan and burn up your computer on both laptops and table models,
