because in the days when buttons and fasteners first came out -- men dressed themselves, however women were dressed by others!!
another fun one -- most men were right handed.... medevil men had to be prepared for battle at all times.... to keep their fighting hand warm they slid it into their jackets so the buttons had to be open to that side.
women would often breast feed and holding a hild only had one hand.... they needed the buttons easily opened from that side with the baby at the left breast and then being able to toss the material over the child safely.

Most people give out the explanation above... but I propose an alternative:
There's a greater majority of right-handed people. If a man is fighting with swords (think medieval times) and he wore a left-sided fasterning top, a right handed man would be able to pierce the abdomen by inserting the blade through the top that fastens to the left. However, a right handed man would not be able to insert a sword through the fastening of a right-sided fastening top.
This became unnecessary once full-body armor became the rule. But when chain mail and leather was first used for protection, it quickly became clear thta right-sided was better for fighting men.

I certainly do not buy the argument that men dressed themselves, women were dressed by others. It is simply not so. Rich and wealthy were dresses by others, poor and needy dressed themselves.
I'm more inclined to think it had to do with where men carried their weapons and such. However, it doesn't explain why women's clothes had to be the other way. Maybe, when a man a nd a woman walk together, he has a sword on the left side, woman on the right side, and he cannot look inside her blowse easily? Hehe, that's just a guess.

Because men never used to dress themselves. To have the fastenings to the right made it easier for the person dressing them.

All women are thought to be left-handed. Particularly annoying with front fastening trousers. Don't fashion designers (men) know that there is a report saying that left-handed people have a tendency to homicide? Well, now they know why!

go find a 1994 eddition of elle or vouge, THATS menswear, oversized blazers with shoulderpads and dress pants, all thats in them, and the k-mart adds in them have to be the worst, id say that men are looking more feminine, not the other way around. i can recall 5 times in the last week where ive been mistaken for a girl, and my hair is not that long, not even past my jaw. maybe its my skinny jeans that are throwing them off....woman have been wearing sneakers since forever, and i wouldnt consider them hi fashion now, who cares that woman wear tank tops now, men shouldnt wear them, they make guys look like trailerpark trash, a fitted peacoat can be very feminine, and the rest are just as ridiculous

in the days of the Empire.
Gentlemen dressed themselves, and the women were dressed by others, mainly their servants. the fasteners were reversed to make this task easier.

When you get old and have to take care of your spouse, it will be easy for you to dress and undress them because when you face them , the buttons are set up the way you are familiar with.
