A woman has a child that is mildly mentally challenged (cannot talk and is over-active), but she is a great mom to her child. She has a girlfriend who is very cool; they hang out, talk, laugh, and just do all around girl stuff. However, when the mom with the special needs child needs a sitter, she can't count on her girlfriend to watch her kid. Is it wrong to be upset at the friend for not wanting to assist or support her when it comes to watching her kid? Why do you think the girlfriend doesn't want to watch the kid? Is she afraid that maybe she can't handle the responsibility?

Some people just don't like to watch kids; I love my friend's children, but I won't watch them for her. They are great when they are with their parent, but I'm just not a kid-person. I don't want that kind of responsibility. Just because the friend is a friend of the mom, doesn't make her automatic baby sitting material. It's not like one is obligated to babysit just because your friend has a child.
Hope this helps!

In my opinion, the girlfriend is perfectly comfortable with the child when around supervision of the mother. But is completely terrified of the idea of babysitting the child. She's afraid she might mess up, or do something wrong, as many people would. The fact that the child is mildy mentally challenged does change the circumstances. There is more worry when dealing with such a child than with the average child. If I were the mother, I would not get angry at the girlfriend. The mother has to realize, even the best of her friends arent going to be okay with watching over her child.

It might not have anything to do with the childs mentality, the friend just might not like babysitting, or maybe she wants to hang out with the mom when the mom gets a chance to go out. Do both women have a child and one mom watches the others kids but doesn't return the favor? That happened to me, my friend thought it was no biggie for me to watch her son "just for a bit" and not even come home sometimes, yet never "felt like it today" when I needed the favor. Needless to say I said that I will when she catches up on the hundred "trades" she still owes me!

You cant consider someone not your friend because they arent everything to you. Some people just do not want to watch other peoples kids, or just may not like a certain kid. Doesnt make them a bad person or a bad friend. I find it worse when a friend does things in a harmful way then when they neglect to do what is expected. If everyone accepted others for who they are without judgment and without looking for something from others this world would be a much better place. Good Luck to the woman.

She's probably just scared of the responsibility. I refuse to watch children under the age of 10 because I can't handle the responsibility, handicapped or not.

maybe the friend doesnt know what to do, or is uncomfortable around children in general. and watching children is a responsibility, whether the child is mentally challenged or not.

So people just arent' great with kids. Kids with difficulty would be terribly stressful to watch - ESPECIALLY if they are friends! That is a lot to expect a friend to do. There are special people who watch special kids and that's the way it should be.
