My understanding of Islamic law was that women were allowed to wear silk, but not men.

Silk has nothing to do with illegal sexual intercourse. What you may be confused about is the fact that it is haram (forbidden) for Muslim men to wear silk, except for very rare circumstances. Muslim woman are permitted to wear silk though.

Women can wear silk and gold. Muslim men are not supposed to wear either.
