IS he lying to me?

This guy told my best friend I was cute and funny and smart and he said he knew I liked him, but he thought of my as "just a friend" (Classic, right?). Whenever I'm around him he starts to whisper to his friend or is uneasy and there is major tension. After or during the time he is whispering to his friend, he glances my way until I catch him looking. I can't help but have a feeling he might have just told my friend that or because he said it is now REALLY uneasy. But, why would he tell my friend that? HELP! What do you think? Am I just over examining things and paranoid?
