they're the GREATEST in my opinon!!!! why do people always want a "specific" breed of cat or dog? all they need to do is adopt a mixed at their local SPCA or animal shelter. these pets truly sometimes turn out to be better than one typical breed! I have 2 cats. my 2 yr. old female is a all black domestic medium hair who I found as a stray when she was only 5 weeks old. she's a mixed breed cat and she's the BEST!! my other cat is a 6 month old greyish brown tabby who I adopted from my SPCA back in July. he's definatly a mixed and he's sooooooooo sweet!! in my experience of owning a purebred dog is them having a health issue. purebred dogs and cats aren't no better than mixed breeds of dogs and cats!! it's just my own opinion and from my own personal experience! what do you think! I just don't really understand why people would pay all that $ for purebreeds when mixed breeds are "mostly" better in the long run.

I would personally NEVER buy from a breeder because there all too many unwanted cats/dogs in shelters already awaiting a good and caring home!

Nonething is wrong with them! Some people think that having a "purebred" cat or dog will help them make money by breeding them and selling them! Back yard breeders! They make me want to...punch something.... There are a select few breeders that do care for them animals. I bought have brought three dogs total in my lifetime so far, all from the same breeder. She has her buyers sign a paper saying that the buyer will spray/neuter thier newly bought pup......if the buyer don't do it then legal actions can and will be taken. She puts alot of money into her pups then what she gets out, which is something most of them "small back yard " breeders don't realize: there is no profit in selling puppies! And if there is its only a slightly profit which was probably in result of not caring for the pups.In all my years I have seen a few "purebred" cats....which do sell for more money then i have seen purebred pups. What I don't get is why do people insist in calling thier purebred dog a purebred? Because there are no pureebred dogs, they are interelate. Sure they can be registered but so can mixed breeds or cross breeds( American Canine Hybrid Club)I personally think that the mixed breeds are better to have because they generally have more then two breeds mixed in and that reduces the chance of a specific's breed's genetic health problem. For all those "mutts"* out there, YOU RULE!!

Actually, nothing at all. It's the purebreds that are unhealthy. It's called Hybrid Vigor. Basically, the farther back one must go to find a common ancestor between the parents, the genetically stronger their offspring will be. Basically, the way genetics go, good traits often outweigh the bad, and you end up with the best of both worlds in a mixed breed dog or cat.

For example, most german shepherds have genetically bad hips (more so than most large breeds) and are prone to skin disorders like allergies. Labrador retrievers often have genetically bad elbows and are prone to fatty tissue disorders.

However, breed them, and in most cases, (because of the way all these shortfalls are originally passed on), you will get a dog with better hips, better elbows, and a much smaller chance of developing fatty tissue or skin problems. It's a "chances are" situation, and it's not flawless. A mix can still have the bad traits of it's parents' breeds. They're just more likely to have not been passed on, or at least in a less severe form.

As far as breeding for show and improvement... it's rare to find both in the US. Most breeds have had significant downfalls imbedded within the breed because of preferences and regulations set forth by show organizations like the AKC. Working-bred Shepherds don't meet show requirements because their backs don't slope. Show-bred Shepherds can't do the kind of work non-show-breds can easily do, because the sloped back causes lots of hip problems at an early age, aggrivated further by excessive work of the joint.

I agree there are lots and lots of unwanted animals in shelters, and in an ideal world we would all go there and get our pets. But in reality this does not work. I volunteer for a local cat shelter, and am not allowed to adopt from them, or any other shelters in London as I do not have a garden. I live in a large 2 bedroom flat, with room enough for 4 cats, but because I do not have a garden they will not allow me to adopt. I do not see why I should be discriminated against, because I have plenty of room inside the house, so I went to a responsible breeder and got my 2 Burmese cats from her. I was happy to pay the money I paid out to get my cats. Please don't judge people who get cats from breeders, there is often a very good reason why they have opted for a pure breed, and if they can afford it and are willing to live up to their responsibility as loving owners there is no reason they should not have a pure breed.

Both of my cats are spayed, so I am not trying to make any money from breeding them, they are my beloved pets, and get more than than their share of love and attention.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with mixed breed animals. They are still animals too. People all have their personal choices on which animal they want. Some people choose to have a pure bread dog because of their look or history while other people choose to raise mixed breed animals because their usually cheaper and their are usually a good selection of them being born and placed up for adoption. Pure or mixed it still doesn't mean that they are not animals and serve the same happiness to their owners.

I got my pit bull from a rescue program especially for pits and my cat is a mixed breed . I love both of them alot. I dont really know why people would like the very best of the breed , i know deep down inside they would treat a specific breed the same way as a mixed breed.

actually breeds are supposed to be less smart. I don't think so but mixed animals are way better! I mean they are healthier, more beautiful, react better to what you say and trained easier. If you want a biological explanation for that imagine that "breeds" have the same ancestors(way way back), so it's like incest. It's a fact that this way you get more chances to pass to the next generation problems.
Why do people want the "breeds"? I'm guessing because they can sell their puppies and train them to breeds specialists(=less time to spend on them)

There isn't a thing wrong with mixed breeds. I wouldn't have it anyother way.

When I adopted my big guy he looked like a chow he was cute puppy until he grew then I realized that he's mixed breed which was fine me. He's part Lab/Chow/Dane talk about a big boy he so kind and gentle with everyone except others doggies.

Some people are looking for specific traits found only in apure breed. But my own opinion is I love the animal for thier personality not pure or otherwise. I have a cairn/westie mix and she is great.

It's all simply a matter of personal preference. We have short hair and guys like it. And i prefer a guy with short hair over a person with long hair because long curly hair tends to make guys look too girly.
