The engagement party is something the bride and groom throw for their friends and family to celebrate their upcoming wedding. It's a party to announce their intentions.
The bridal shower and bachelorette party are thrown for the bride by her bridesmaids and maid/matron of honor. (And sometimes her mom) It's a girls-only party.
They are not the same thing. If you have thrown the engagement party, then don't ask for the shower. If the women decide to throw one on their own, enjoy it. You should NOT host a shower yourself.
None of the parties are a "need", they are a "want" for additional fun and celebration before the big day.

I was always under the impression that your friends threw a bridal party for you. I don't think it is something that you plan yourself. If your girls want to have a shower for you, then let them. I wouldn't press the issue, but I definitely wouldn't turn it down. Of course, I could be completely wrong about that.

not really. both are just really for the fact of giveing gifts for the couples home. the engagement party's main purpose is to introduce the two familys. which will happen anytime. its also all about the couple.
a bridal shower is just for the women who are going to be in your wedding. its all about the bride for that party, you get gifts to use in your new life. mostly nighties and housewares.
its really up to you. you can combine the two into one big celebration party if you want also.
best of blessings to you and your hubby. congrats!

do whatever makes you happy, but please bear this in mind: you are asking a lot of your friends to have them come to 800 parties before what is a large party just for you, so be sensitive to your nearest and dearest and do what makes sense to you.

No, they are the same thing. You'll just make your friends waste more money on your gifts.
