Why can't you have both? Seriously, if you do your homework and balance the specs of the diamond across all areas ie good colour not the best ie D, good clarity (why pay $$$$ for something you can only see under a microscope?) good cut (most important) you can still have a good diamond for your budget..no need to compromise my friend. No need to present your girl with the most perfect diamond of only 0.5 ct in size that you need to strain your eyes in order to see the perfection. lol

And while any woman that really loves you will be happy with whatever size diamond you can afford..size does matter..I mean c'mon if a woman wants a diamond over a pretty gemstone that costs waaay less than a diamond, it's because they have to have whatever one else has ie "show"..regardless of the PC dribble, they do want the biggest diamond you can afford not the "perfect" 0.5 ct and that is the truth..of course they don't want a massive thing either that is really yellow and has cracks. Also take note of her finger and hand size..a teeny tiny diamond would look silly on a large hand/ thick finger. Just remember balance and you will be fine. Good luck.

I used to think I wanted a big diamond...I got engaged June 3rd and when my fiance opened the ring box WOW it wasn't a huge diamond (1/2) but the quality was amazing!! I had never seen a diamond sparkle like that. It is a Leo diamond and wow does it look great. It changed my mind right there on what was important. Just make sure the place you buy the ring from has a guarantee on the diamond...if mine falls out for whatever reason they will replace it for free. Size doesn't always matter, I've had sooo many comments on how beautiful my ring is and everyone comments on how sparkly it is!! Good Luck

Neither! Pick a ring that you think fits her... Think about what she is like not what she would like! What kind of person is she? If she's a simple girl with simple tastes then get a small simple ring. If she's a big show off then try your best to accommodate with a ring she can show off. Buy a ring that is every thing she is BUT... remember this is the person that you hope to spend forever with, that means you'll be sharing everything, even your debt... So don't go over board. And don't worry if she loves you you could buy her a $25 ring from Wal-Mart and she'll love it just because it's from you! Good Luck!

BOTH. Size DOES matter in this case. My husband originally bought me a one carat diamond of very high quality and I was so disappointed I just couldn't even hide the look on my face. 2 months later he just took me along and let me pick what I wanted, which was a 3 carat high quality stone. I LOVE my ring. I love my husband. I am not much into jewelery, so I figured the ONE ring I will wear for the rest of my life had to be fabulous. :)

Depends on the girl. For me, he could buy me one from a gum machine and I wouldn't care as long as he was serious. Your girl's best friend or sister is the key to this answer, write her an email. She'll be ecstatic and pleased to help. Plus, you know her better than anyone, think long and hard about any hints she may have dropped about her ring size or preference in styles or cuts. Look at her other rings, whats the theme? Does she consistently buy flashy ones? simple ones? Be creative, make the proposal something she'll always cherish and she'll be thrilled regardless of what you buy her.

True Story: A man purchased his bride-to-be a plastic wedding ring (fake). He couldn't afford to buy her one at the time. Ten years later he bought her a beautiful expensive diamond ring, and they were married 60 years!

Now that is a beautiful story.

Honestly, I'd rather find a man that is good hearted, and it's not the diamond that counts. I'd rather have a tiny little .07 carat in the beginning and over time if he wants to get me a little bigger fine. But I prefer being treated right.

Know your ... fiancee to be! if she's into engagement rings just for a ring; well good luck: it might never be big enough or good enough! otherwise, any nice ring that becomes really meaningfull (because of the way you proposed, or the significance you make of it....) will do. I got a Hematite ring as engagement ring because this mineral meat something to me and my (now) husband knew it! who needs a diamond!

quality, because for the simple fact that it doesnt matter how big the dimond is if its a poor quality it will be worth less. the higher the quality the more its worth regardless of size.

being sure you are marrying for the right reasons, and to the right eprson.
Quality over size! ( But her friends will look for size; they wouldn't know a Zirconium from a piece fo carbon)
