Many people keep their bananas in a different place than others. I want to see if anyone has reasoning behind any placement or if it is just out of habit from growing up.

I have a very general rule about all my produce - I place it wherever the grocery store keeps it - if its in a refrigerated case, then it goes in the fridge. Onions, tomatoes, and bananas go in dry storage becaue that's where they keep them in the store. I always had a problem remembering exactly where to store my stuff and then one day it hit me - I have a guide right there in the store!

Store bananas at room temperature. Do not expose the fruit to extreme temperatures. Unripe bananas should not be stored in the refrigerator because the cold temperature will stop the ripening process. Ripe bananas can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days to extend their usage time before they become too ripe. Once they are placed in the refrigerator their peel will turn brown but this will not affect the flesh of the banana. If stored with other fruit, bananas will accelerate the ripening of the other fruit.

I like banana's cold, so i have the temptation to put them in the refridgerator, but their are multiple reasons why you don't want to. One prevents (somewhat) them from ripening, a bigger issue though is that they release a chemical to ripen that can contaminate your other food and make it over ripen and spoil. That is why it is best to store bananas away from other perishable fruits- or even flowers. i worked for a floral shop and we always make a big deal to tell our customers not to put a corsage/bouquette in the same refridgerator as a banana or it will be ruined.
* true story, our delivery driver once ate a banana in the van, and not thinking through the peel in back. Later on in the deliveries the roses were discolored and gross.

Keep the bananas out of the fridge, in an area where there is plenty of air. If you put the bananas in the fridge, they will turn brown and soggy.

I keep my bananas out of the fridge. If I put them in the fridge everything tastes like banana.

Out. They need to ripen as naturally as they can to produce the natural sugars. Making them cold retards that. Always hang them. Keep them out of the sun. Only buy organic. And enjoy. Eaten just as the first streaks of brown tell you they are ready, nothing beats a great banana.

The song says don't.

If you ever intend to make banana bread, save the borderline ones for that. The freezer is best. In a bag.

Out....don't like black or freckled bananas. Only in the freezer, when sliced up for a frozen snack.

Refrigerating them will make them brown & mushy. Always store them at room temperature so that they can ripen naturally.
It is best to hang them on a hook. Second choice would be a wire basket.

I keep them out of the fridge. They go bad, faster in the fridge.
