My dog is limping after a walk and he's really hot. He won't even let me touch his paw, I'm wondering if maybe it is a thorn or if it's something worse. He's not making any noise, and he keeps walking, what to do?

You need to check his foot very carefully, especially between the pads and the bottom of the foot. He may very well have something in there and if you leave it, his foot will get infected. If you can't find and remove whatever's bothering him, you'll need to get a vet to remove whatever it is. Some dogs are very stoic and don't make any noise, they need their people to take care of them.

There are a number of things that could be causing the problem. First, check all of the toenails on the foot the dog is favoring. If you do not notice a broken/irritated toenail move on to checking the pad of the foot, examine the area between the toes as well as the paw. Your dog could have a thorn or he could have bruised his paw during your walk. The other possibility is an orthopedic problem such as a torn cruciate ligament.

I would advise giving the dog a dose of aspirin tonight, checking the paw and seeing the the problem has resolved itself tomorrow. The aspirin dose for dogs is 10mg/pound every 12 hours. At the clinic I work at we suggest 5 grain (325 mg) tablets given with a meal. Do not exceed 2 tablets every 12 hours. Good luck. I hope your pup feels better soon.

Ditto on the vet. I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like he might have an infected cut of some sort on his paw.

Your dog may have arthritis. Give one to two aspirin per day. I deal with this everyday with my dog. She is still in comfort although she is 14 years old.
