TRUST ME...I have tried this and it works! Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Add some Dawn dish soap. Wash and rinse your dog about 3 times with this mixture. You will not get rid of the smell completely, but it really cuts it down! The spray from the skunk itself is oil based, the Dawn dish soap breaks this down and makes it come off the dog much easier. The vinegar and the hydrogen peroxide work on the odor itself. Tomato juice DOES NOT WORK....don't waste you time on that! I know...PEEUUUUU! Good luck!

Skunk Smell Remover 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent. The stuff for washing dishes in the sink, not something for dishwashers.
Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up like Vesuvius. We are, after all, making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog with this while it is still foaming, because it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficacy because the oxygen boils off. Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans and unlucky cats.
Sometimes being chased by a dog is not enough to scare a polecat off the property, in which case, mothballs will do the trick.
If you do not enjoy kitchen chemistry, here are a couple commercial alternatives that will also do the job. Unlike the previous potion, these can be stored. Actually it's a good idea to take a odor neutralizer on trips, because Cassis has no compunctions about chasing strange wildlife or rolling in something rotten.

Oh man, do I have the memories...
okay, a lot depends on where the dog got sprayed. You want to be careful about getting anything in the eyes or ears.
You've probably heard about using tomato juice but I had mixed success. I've heard (but have never tried) that the feminine douche from Massengill (regular, not scented) is supposed to neutralize the musk from the spray as well.
On my dog's worst episode, I went to the vet and bought a bottle of the neutralizer they use (groomers or PetsMart may have this as well).
Whatever you do, don't expect a miracle. It'll take a few days for the smell to go away fully.
(and that is how I came to nickname my dog STINK)
Good luck!

Believe it or not, tomato juice works great. There are numerous other products in the pet stores that de-skunk a dog or cat. But plain ole tomato juice is the cheapest. Unless of course you have a St. Bernard.

One bottle of hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 squirt of liquid dish soap
mix in bucket and sponge on dog let set 10-15 minutes and rise well with plain water.
It will work better than tomato juice does.
This is what I use on my dogs and they get skunked abuot every other month

There are commercial shampoos that you can get for this at places like PetSmart, but the old tomato/lemon juice routine works just as well - although it will take time to get all the smell out...

Well my dogs get hit with skunks so much I could never afford to put tomatoe juice on them. I generally wash them with dish soap, spray them with fabrize then if it is really strong a sqirt or two of cologne or perfume. They don't smell perfect but it is definately tolerable.

eeeeeeewwwwwwww, it is true. tomatoe juice. a few times, wear old clothes when you wash him/her.
happened to my father's dog, he took him to a salon to get the smell off and they did not do it. I ended up washing him a number of times.
remember to change your clothes as the smell will travel with you when you do....LOL :)
