If you are not engaged then simply say when we are ready ..

If you're engaged, tell them the day (or if that's up in the air or if they might not get invited, give a season or year).
If you're dating someone, smile and say "when I want to."
If you're single, tell them marriage isn't on your radar right now.

But I've found that the absolute BEST way to shut up nosy people is to answer a question with a question. If they ask when you're getting married, smile and ask why they want to know. That usually throws people pretty quick. If they recover and answer that they're just curious, say "You know, I've been asked this question a lot recently. Why do think so many people are curious about my love life?" They'll stop eventually and won't ask again.

If you are sporting an engagement ring, then tell them. If not, just tell them
1) Whenever I feel ready for it.
2) Not until the right man comes along.
3) I haven't decided if I want to yet. There's so much to see and do first.
4) That's my business.
5) I think I'll probably just live in sin. It's soooo much less expensive don'cha know.
6) What, and end up like you? I don't think so.

Perhaps there is a reason people have been asking this question and they are sincerely interested in your answer. You may think they are nosy but don't be a rude one when you reply.

im not sure either, but i know what ur going through.
ive been engaged over a year more close to 1 and a half.
so i now have people constantly asking.

my reply has been i may start organising it next yr for 2008.

feels like i got the ring to shut me up for a while coz everytime i try to set a date i cant get my other half to talk seriouly with me. so my real answer would be when ever he wants to

I don't know. I will make sure you are notified when we make our engagement announcement. This used to get on my nerves also. Just wait until you get married and the next question will be "when are you going to have a baby?". Geez, nosy people.

My favorite thing to say before we set a date was always "Oh, the Fourth of never." Soon after that answer was out there people stopped asking.

just smile and say, "Why do you ask?" That also works in other situations and gets the person being nosy to realize their question is unwanted.
or you can reply with sarcastic answers to sidestep the question.

Before I was even engaged, people were asking me. I would just smile and laugh like they were joking. You don't have to give them a straight answer if there is not one.
