My older dog (10years) is about to die of cancer. We just found out that she only has weeks or months not long though. We want to go get another small dog for our other dog to play with. Would it be better to get it before she dies or better to wait until after she is gone. Some people have told me that she is waiting to die because she wants to make sure that her little dog has someone to play with.

I would be inclined to do it now - let your dog bond with a new one before his old friend dies. Just please be considerate of the sick dog and don't let a puppy bother her.

I would wait. Your older dog deserves all of your attention right now. A new one will require a lot of your energy and will take time away from your old friend. Also, your small dog needs to be able to grieve for her friend as well. A spur of the moment choice can lead to problems. Look around. Spend time with your friend. And when the time comes to move on, you'll know it.
Good luck and my heart goes out to you; I've been there (my best friend was 14).

It is hard to know what our pets are thinking. Your biggest concern would be the pups bountiful energy, they will try to play with anything and your dying dog may just not be in the mood for play, making her passing a harrassed time not a peaceful one which I am sure is what you would want.

If you are bringing in an older dog you may have settling in problems, dominance issues etc. all stressful for a dying animal.

In all honesty I would wait. Unless you can separate the dying dog from the hussle and bussle.

Sorry to hear about your older dog. Hugs and thoughts with you and her.

If it were me I would wait until your dog has passed. I would want to give her all the attention i could before her time comes. Let her know that she's loved. She might get jealous of a new dog and become depressed. Good Luck. I'm so sorry about your dog.

From my personal experience I had a female Pitty who was very sick with bladder cancer. I knew Noey was going to die. It was a matter when I felt the time was right to pts. While she was at home I looked for another puppy and found one I liked. I didn't bring the puppy home until Noey was gone.I didn't want to stress a extremely sick dog. That wouldn't be fair to her. I did bring another puppy home about 2 weeks after I pts Noey because of the feeling of severe loss. Sadie the small puppy help to eliviate some of that loneliness.

I would wait until she passes away. She deserves all your love and attention especially since she is so sick. However, when you do decide to get a dog go to the pound or a rescue organization..there are lots of good dogs out there waiting for you to love them! I got my dog from a rescue and he is a wonderful dog!

I have done it both ways. One positive thing is that my old sick dog got a second wind in trying to keep up with the new puppy. It may have made her last days better. Just make sure the puppy doesn't overwhelm the dog.

Do what you feel is right.

Go to a shelter or contact a rescue, if you see something that stikes out to you, then get it. Don't go out of your way and get another dog just to get another dog. It'sa life you're taking into your home (but you already know that).

Who knows, you may go months with only one dog before the right dog comes your way or he / she could fall into your lap tomorrow.

Have a good idea of what you want, look into rescues and shelters (please do not buy from a puppy store!!) and see what's available. Take your time and don't rush into anything.

it might stress your sick dog to have a new member of the family and your old dog deserves ALL your time, love and attention right now, when she's gone then go about finding a new dog
good luck

Look now, but wait till she is gone. You don't want to put any more stress on a very sick dog. Right now, she needs, and deserves ALL of your love and attention.
