I've got a saturn, '95 sl1. We've put over 35,000 miles on it in less than a year. The only money we've put into it is regular maintenence, such as plugs, wires, oil, filter, whatnot. And the total purchase price... $900.

So far, the best one would have to be a 1989 Ford Probe GT that I found (in 2003) for just $500. The A/C was broken and the clutch was worn out, but it never left me stranded and was actually a lot of fun to drive. I bought it for the Grassroots Motorsports $2004 Challenge - after that I sold it to a neighbor and he's still driving it, even though the odometer reading is well over 200,000 miles.
When you're shopping for something that cheap, the mechanical condition of the vehicle is more important than the make and model. I would take a well kept Yugo over a thrashed and abused Honda.

get the 2006 consumer reports buying guide.
they list used cars with good repair histories and different price ranges.
always a good bet with a toyota or honda.
