I bought some sugar and put it in a sealed container (a clean one) and the sugar smells bad but tastes fine. I have 20 pounds of it and don't want to waste it --has this ever happened to you and do you think it is rotten?

When I worked in a restaurant, often when we poured a brand new 50lb bag of sugar into the bin, it was "stinky", kind of musty with a hint of old gym shoes. It tasted good and worked fine in the recipes though so I think that your sugar is just fine to use.

Could've picked up a smell from the container, that's my bet. If it tastes fine I'd eat it.

Bury it around your plants to increase microorganism activity in the soil. Put in the hole when you plant tomatoes for sweetness. Make hummingbird food. Add to the compost pile, again for the microbes
