Use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to re install If the computer still freezes boot into normal windows put the xp disk in the drive open explorer open xp disk click set up exe then install windows will start install procedure pick the upgrade if you want to prserve file or clean install if not this is the full install options

Try cleaning the cd and blowing in the cdrom drive (with the tray open) to get the lazer clean. Chances are if you have a computer that old the drive needs cleaned... XP also requires at least a 500 mhz processor and 128 megs of ram, just to run like crap... Also, if you're trying to instal XP to make the system stop crashing in the first place, you may want to take the side pannel off the tower and make sure that the CPU fan/heatsink arent full of dust. If they are, i would suggest using the hose attachment of your vaccum cleaner to remove the dust and unscrewing the cpu fan from the heatsink when doing so. Also try to vaccum off the power supply's vents and make sure that the fan in it is working.

When you boot up the computer have the xp cd in the CD drive and it should give you the option to boot from the xp install cd. If not then go into bios and change the drive boot order to boot from the cd. This should allow you to install XP without having the computer freeze while in windows.

Here is a check list before you consider to Reinstall Windows XP on your PC
1) You should back up all important information from your computer to a cd/dvd
2)You sould be in possession of a genuine copy of windows software
(it makes life easier when you are online)
3) You should possess one good commercial antivirus software of your choice.( I don't mind if you opt to use one of the free offerings, It is your choice)
4) You should possess cd/dvd of any other programs that you frequently intend to use on your pc
You should start formatting and reinstallation when your are ready with the above prerequisites
Installation procedure.
Boot your computer from your cd drive
Insert the winxp cd in your cd drive and reboot your computer from the cd. The cd starts the installation procedure. If it doesn't boot from the cd , then press F2 during boot process to enter the bios settings, and change the boot order so that your computer boots from your cd first.
On the installation screen It asks if you want to upgrade or to do a new install.
Select new install. (this applies to fresh or new installation, For those who want to upgrade from previous versions of Windows to a newer version can choose to "Upgrade", it will keep all the data and installed programs on the computer safe, and convert the previous version to the newer version)
Partitioning Hard Disk
You will eventually reach to a window where it will ask to choose the partition where you want to install windows.
At this time read the options , which keys you have to press to do what etc. carefully.
First of all select every partition that you see in the box, and delete it.
When you delete all the partitions you will get one single unformatted space.
Now it is the turn to create a new partition in the unpartitioned space.
Create partitions of your liking.
When all unpartitioned space has been converted to partitions, select the uppermost c drive, or c partition to install windows on.
The computer will format the drive. It will ask what type of format you want NTFS/ FAT32.
For winXP NTFS is better, unless you have special resaons to convert in FAT32.
That's all ,
Proceeding with installation
There will be many screens where you have to click on to proceed.Keep reading what comes on the screen and make your choices. And your computer will reboot a few times during the course of installation and will eventually be Finished.

Are you trying to install on boot-up?
If so you might want to try entering the bios and changing it so it boots from cd rom before hard drive, unless that is done already.
If you are trying to install under ME, I would suggest closing all background tasks with CTRL, ALT, DEL, and trying again.
Otherwise you may want to try booting to safe mode and see if you are able to install there. Holding F8 on startup will probably help do that.
