The microwave oven is made of metal and there is a metal mesh in the door, so that the radiation can't get out. If you circumvent the safety devise, so that you can start it with the door open, you may get hurt, but you wouldn't die, unless you stand there until you get cooked.
You may get an electric shock from the microwave, if it's broken, but you can get that from a TV or a computer or any other electric devise as well.

To G-gnomegrl:
Your advise to cover the food is very strange. Either you cover the food with something that lets the radiation through and it makes no difference at all, or you cover it with something that shuts the radiation out and the food will not get hot.

no, you will not ever obtain cancer from standing close to a microwave door while the microwave is operating. if you look closely, the part of the door you can see through has tiny holes in it. due to properties of wave motion, holes which are smaller than a set ratio to the wavelength will actually act as a solid, and any waves of that length or greater will bounce off of them. this is the case with the door on your microwave.

there is, of course, the chance of an old or faulty seal along the edge of the door on the microwave. the microwaves would then leak in small quantities if they were able to bounce at the right angles. the chances of getting cancer from these is nill, however... particularly b/c microwaves lack the energy to be radioactively carcinogenic and b/c there would be so few leaking out anyway.

no you won't die. Microwaves however function with an indcutor sending magnetic waves from one side to the other and is how your food gets heat up.

Now these waves don't just flow from one wall of your microwave to the other, so radiation does flow from your microwave. And if you stand too close to your microwave you'll be exposed to that radiation.

Medical research still hasn't been throughly done on the effects of magnetic radiation and the human body but many lead to beleive it causes cancer because it alters the cells.

So you won't die of it, but may develop cancer because of it.

Also, if you want my advice, also cover your food inside the microwave because these waves can alter the composition of the food. Which research again has not been done on but some suggest this is another cause for cancer related to microwaves.

No, there's never been a recorded case of someone dying to the microwave radiation being produced by an undamaged microwave.

Read about government tests of microwaves here:

It's not that kind of radiation. You would know if you were getting affected by microwave radiation. The microwave cause friction as they pass through the molecules. Radiation comes in many different forms, a lot of people don't realize that fire is a form or radiation, and so is light.

Back in the day, the radiation produced by a microwave was some a concern. However, in the past few years they have been made so that they don't release any harmful radiation. So, it's pretty safe.

No. It's an old wives tale. You are likely to get way more radiation from the sun, than from your microwave.

Yes but it takes time over years.... It can give you brain cancer or a tumor because of the radiation from the microwave.

As long as the microwave is not leaking you are fine.

Even if it was leaking, you would have to stand there for quite a while to die!
