I'm having some insecurities about what kind of personalities that my mother in-law is attracted to. Take my sister in-law for an example. She's 21, married, has a two year daughter and she's 24/7 drama queen. She needs sympathy every min of each day from our mother in-law whenever she's not feeling good. She loves the attention that she gets and likes to sabatoge my relationship with our mother in-law. On the other hand, I'm 5 years older than her, I come from a different cultural background where I'm very quiet and I'm pretty much a reserved person. I only talk to certain people that are in my life. Seem like everyone likes my sister in-law cause she's dramatic, immature, but out going while I'm older, mature, but a quiet and reserved person. But then, my husband, my family and my closet friends loves me for who I am and hate the personality that my sister in-law has. So I guess I shouldn't have to change for who I am as me .. such as my personality and stuff.

FYI: The sister in-law in this scenario isn't related to any of my husband's family. She's just married to my husband's younger brother.

Yes, I have a sister-in-law like this. It's my husband's sister...hence my mother-in-law's own daughter. The key to this is just to hang out more with your family. Spend very few moments with 'his' relatives...remember...you ARE your husband's family.

Just be your true self ... that is the always the best. The only opinion that really matters is that your husband has for you. The love you both share and ultimately it should fall in place. I know my MIL and I do not have the greatest relationship at all.. she didn't even contact us during the death of our child - so I have really no relationship with her at all. Needless to say I will respect her for being my husband's mother and treat her appropriately but her opinion doesn't mean anything in my life.

Everyone is different. But you do not change who you are as long as you love yourself. Your mother-in-law most likely hates that your sister-in-law is like that, but feels she has to be there for her, because she is still a child in many many ways and you are not. Try and not let this bother you. Good Luck!!!!!!!

The daughter-in-law is not marrying the mother-in-law. The old bat has no right to look for anything. It's what her son wants that counts.

don't compare your self to your sister in law or your relationship you have with your mother in law with hers.. Your mother in law may be great-full that you are independent, quiet and respect full.. besides its your partners views that count most. I am sure if your mother in law sees you and your partner are happy together, she will be happy.. Be true to your self and I am sure you will have her respect.. and with in laws, having their respect is key to a decent relationship with the family.

She is looking for someone just like herself.
Someone who is gonna take care of her little baby, just like she would. She is looking for someone honest and trustworthy, neat and well groomed. But also someone who is them self around her. Relax, she isn't the one marrying you, right..... GOOD LUCK!!!
