Hi Walter...generally they chase their tail for the sheer fun of entertainment especially when they are young. Older cats will do this too, but not as much.
Here's a poem I hope you will enjoy about a cats tale of tails.
I can't seem to figure out why my tail follows me around.
It is there when I eat, it is there when I drink. It is there when I play and it gets in the way.
When I am running and trying to climb the wall, I see it out of the corner of my eye. It is striped and looks like a snake. I stop dead in my tracks and turn, but it isn't there. When I turn in a circle, it is sometimes there.
Sometimes it curls over my head and touches my ears. I hate it when it does that. Some day maybe when I am older, I will catch it while it is spying on me. When I sleep it sleeps and when I rest it rests. I wonder if I am the only one this happens to. Maybe all kitties have a tail like mine. Maybe their tails chase them too. A lot of times when I am getting into mischief or doing things I shouldn't be doing, I think it tells on me, because it see's everything I do and it just sits there and watches. My favorite thing to do is climb on freshly folded laundry and instead of giving me balance, it makes mine worse because me and the laundry end up on the floor and then I have to run and hide.... to my surprise it follows me.
Yesterday I was running while playing and I saw it following me, when I looked back to see if it was there, I ran smack into my litter box and fell over. Jeesh, it is always causing trouble for me, but I guess I am somewhat attached to it.

My guess - to begin with it got confused about the tail being part of it's body. After that, could it have noticed the attention and affection you might be showing?
I worked somewhere where there were a lot of feral cats, which some people fed. They accidentally got into poses (perched precariously etc) and noticed my fascination, and me disappearing to get my camera. They did these things more and more. Not for food but for attention. Good on them!

Hi there. My cat used to do this. He would chase his tale round and round, which I found very amusing. However, it used to distress me when he used to bite his tale because it became lumpy. After I had him castrated, he didn't do it as much and now he doesn't do it at all. They saw that cats chase their tales for fun but bite their tales when they are feeling amourous! So having no balls stopped his desire to bite his tale. I don't know how true that is so don't quote me on it!

Maybebecause it always makes you laugh and gets attention.
Imagine if we had tails, we'd have to have holes in the back of our chairs to push our tails through before sitting down. hehe.
