Because Linux is more or less written by developers and is therefore naturally harder to use. For a developer, it is easier to enter commands into a command line, just like coding. If they want a script they can code it. Not many programs will run on ever distro of Linux so each program has to be compiled on that distro and even then, it may not work without some tweaking.

Windows is designed for ease of use (though some would say otherwise), if you have Windows configured properly and proper security it is just as reliable and stable as any Linux OS. Though, not many home users understand or care to understand how to do so.

I'd have a Mac if I felt like paying the premium for one, someday maybe.

To get to the Dos prompt the partition has to be Fat32, if the partition is NTFS windows does not deal with Dos.
