Try down loading this free program, it is only small and works fine at optimising the PC. It will search for duplicate and un-necessary files and delete them for you. Don't worry it will back up your setting before hand so you can revert back if things don't go right.
http://www.scriptsoft.de/english/winspeedup.php
Also try this program for optimising the start-up procedure of windows. You might be suprised what this will find in your task manager start up file. If your on-line at the time click consult and it will tell you what all your programes are for and if they are needed.

Also try opening the control panel > system > advanced > Performance, then set the "For Best Performance" tab. This will change your windows display to generate simple graphics but will speed up things once you have re-booted.
get rid of any photo's you have selected for your wallpaper as this take time and memory to load up when windows starts

1) music ISNT software, and will in no way slow XP down.
2) reinstalling XP ISNT the only way to speed it up.
what you want to do is uninstall any software you dont use/need by going to Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs.
download spybot search and destroy and remove all spyware.
defrag your pc, run scandisk etc.
I have suggested a great website for you, read the page thoroughly and follow the instructions. i found it made my old pc quicker.
BUT... the only way to make a considerable improvement on performance without getting a new pc is to buy some more memory (RAM).

If it used to be fast: Uninstall unused programs and then clean out cache. "My computer" right click on drives, select "properties" select "disk cleanup" under the "pie chart". . that will clean out most. If you have "Java" do the same but go to the Control Panel to open the Java interface to do it. CLEAN OUT YOUR REGISTRY if you've installed programs that you don't use! "RegCleanXP" works well for me. You can do it manually. . but be careful. It may cause Re-Install of Windows!!!! Once you've done this "DeFragment" your drives! Again under My Computer, right click drive, select "properties" and then choose the "tools" tab on top of that window . select Defragment.
If it never was fast: add memory first, more memory is the best way to improve speed! I've got 1G in mine, two 512k chips, also use highest speed motherboard will support. Processor second, faster drive third. If you add up these costs, look at new computer?

go back to windows millennium like i did. xp is a big program so the only way to speed it up is by having a fast processor and as much memory as your motherboard will take. a hard drive that runs at 7200 rpm will make it slightly quicker than a cheap drive that runs at 5400 rpm

Xp collects loads of crap, the only way to really spead it up, is to say everything to disk that you want and then reinstall the whole thing. That will speed it up until the next time.
