I was on I 5 N and noticed a hwy patrol car parked on the shoulder ahead of me about 50yrds or so. Just as I passed him I was pulled over he said he clocked me on radar (prior to me passing him). I asked how did you radar me when I was behind you? He said they use rear radar? Is this legal can I fight this ticket successfully? There were other cars around me how do they know which car they clocked, especially when the officer is sitting in the front seat with his back to oncoming traffic? Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pay the ticket or ask for a reduction or warning. Most cars are equipped with two antennas one on the front and one on the rear of the vehicle. I doubt if you will win if you fight, there would be a lot of challenges if there were any legal defenses. Officers are trained to estimate speed and use the radar for verification. The judge has heard all of the defenses you have mentioned and its always guilty. I would explain technically but it would be a waste of time. I do feel your pain tho, but to be blunt, you would waste your time with the above. The tickets are written every day and and he has not violated any laws using the rear antenna.

Yes its possible that the Police car has rear radar. The new radar systems use a light beam that it bounces off of the vehicle it is clocking and sends the beam back to the radar detector. Unlike older systems used which clocked the fastest moving object this new system only clock what the Officer wants to clock. Its far more accurate.

Yes police cars have rear radar, they can have thier unit set to track either cars going in other direction or cars in the same direction.

They look in thier rear view mirror at the car going at the faster speed behind him. It is very easy.

It is people like you that clog the system with unwarranted legal proceedings. Since you didn't even give the most important detail (whether you were speeding) it is obvious that it doesn't matter to you as much as getting out of the ticket. Stop whining and pay the ticket.

Did you speed? If so, quit whining, put on your bigboy undies, and pay your ticket. Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when no one is looking.
