other than virus and spyware or those supplied by Microsoft when you buy a new computer, I am assuming no extra bundled software included.....just xp and Word.
Why is this your choice ? please assume general useage with a slant towards graphics.

As an expert user i need these softwares available on my system always:

1. Microsoft Office - Daily Office uses. Alternatively u can also use Openoffice ( A Sun product with vast capabiliites).

2. Adobe Photoshop : For image tweaking uses Alternatively u can also use gimp (A opensource same capability software).

3. Irfanview: Very good image browsing software and free too. Alternatively u can also use Picasa ( A google product).

4. Firefox: Best web browser of its class. Alternatively u can also use Netscape.

5. Mozilla Thunderbird: Best Email Client. Alternatively u can also use Pegasus (Good Email Client).

6. WinRAR : File Compressor / decompressor (Not Free either get cracked or request vendor to install). Alternatively u can also use Winzip.

7. Adobe Acrobat Reader: To read PDF Ebooks (I have a lot of them)

8. Norton Antivirus Software : Best of its class (I blindly rely on it). Alternatively u can also use AVG (Free) or Avast 4 Home (Free).

9. Spybot Search And Destroy : Very Good free spyware blaster ..you did'nt need this if winxp SP2 + Norton Antivirus + firefox browser will be used.

10. Nero 7 Ultra Edition for CD/DVD Writing

11. Dictionary: Wordweb (Free)

12. Macromedia Flash: If u have some interest in animation designing/Web Page Designing.

13. Yahoo Messanger / MSN : for IMs

14. Winamp: For listening music

15. Windows Media Player (Default Install) : For Movies

16. Windows Movie Maker (Default Install): for small time movie editing.

17. K-lite-CodecPack & BSplayer for extended video/audio codec support . Also includes QuickTime Alternative & Real Alternative.

18 Some other SWs like : Corel Draw / Extensis Support / System Mechanic .. etc..

in order of importance/usage:
firefox - web browser, cos internet explorer is tragic
paint shop pro 7 - for image editing and viewing
bitcomet - for downloading stuff
mirc - for downloading stuff
windvd - for dvd playback
winamp - for mp3 playback

incidentally i don't run ANY anti-virus software so that's why it's not on the list, i just don't find it necessary because i know how viruses work and how to remove them manually should the need arise so anti-virus to me is a waste of diskspace.

6. AOL. I love aol. Bring your own broadband and its $9 a month. Lot of decent chats and hook ups. (if they make you pay $15 a month threaten to end it. They will drop it to $9.95
