I'm old enough to remember cars without seat belts.
Moving forward, there's shoulder harnesses, automatic shoulder harnesses, air bags. There's "crumple zones" which have largely displaced "energy absorbing bumper systems."
Motorcycle helmets have always been around, but it's only recently that there have been laws mandating their use.
There have been advances in car tire designs so that they last longer and give better traction in the rain.
There may also be laws about "daytime running lights" for cars.

Here is a list I came up with...

-2 and 3-point seatbelts
-Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
-Driver airbag (SRS, "supplimental restraint system"), front passenger airbag, side-curtain airbags (protects head in side impacts), side impact airbags (protects torso in side impacts)
-Traction Control (TCS)
-Stability Control (given various names like "StabiliTrac")
-"Crumple Zones"
-Side-impact door beams (mandated for 1997)
-Head restraints ("headrests")
-Energy absorbing dashboards
-Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS, on Volvos only)
-"Safety Cage" (reinforced passenger compartment)
-Laminated windsheild glass (resists shattering)
-Tempered glass (for side and rear windows)
-Energy absorbing bumpers
-"breakaway engines" that drop below the car in severe front crashes intsead of intruding into the passenger compartment
-Daytime Running Lights
-Power steering
-Power brakes
-third brake light (center brake light)

The newest one is the Autobrain, where we no longer even have to care where we are going, let alone pay attention to what we are doing while getting there.

To be introduced sooner than you think.
