I guess being possessive is very individual behaviour. Possessiveness comes from two reasons: Jealousy and Insecurity. So the person who has some inferiority complex or lower confidence level may tend to be more possessive. But generally i have seen that both are possessive about each other in early stages of courtship. Once the trust is established, you dont feel insecure and jealour anymore. Also if your mate is being liked a lot by opposite sex, can make you more insecure. But people feel really bad when their bf/gf talks to somebody in particular whom they really despise.

At least here in Mexico, men are normally more possesive than women. Of course is not an acceptable attitude because it is better being confident and honest

Men are selfishly possessive. They can't stand their female counterpart being insincere, irrespective of their sincerety.
N I think even some women are the same.
Still it all varies from person to person.
