No, he can't.
You can beat this easy in court BUT you will for sure need an attorney. I went through this once when I was driving a friend's car that DIDNT have insurance and I got the ticket because I was driving.
The attorney cost me $300 but I beat it.

Most states require at least liability insurance on automobiles.
First, you broke the law by driving without a license, and in most states anything that happens is your fault. Second, you were driving a car with a bad license plate, and although not your fault there was not a good tag, it was your fault you were driving it. If the auto was insured, proof of insurance must be carried in the car. You were probably cited for not having the insurance verification in the car.
When you go to court ,take a copy of the insurance verification and that charge will be dropped.

Where I live, insurance follows the driver, not the car. This is why we are covered by our regular auto insurance when we drive a rental car.
If you get insurance before your court date, you may have a chance of getting the no insurance charge dropped. It all depends on your prior record, the status of your drivers license and the mood of the judge and prosecutor that day.

Either you had insurance or you didn't have insurance. Its no way to straddle the fence. What was wrong with the tag did you buy the car from the friend or someone else. If the vehicle belonged to your friend and had valid insurance, have you friend go to his insurance company and get proof the vehicle was insured. Most states can now verify insurance status from the vehicles tag or by running the vehicle identification number.

the cop can give you the ticket for insurance. but when you go to court take the proof of insurance with you, and the judge will most likely drop the the insurance ticket..but you must show proof of the insurance for the date of the ticket..

Get yourself some insurance right away.
Take it from me. I was sued for mucho dinero about 13 years ago, and if I wouldn't have had insurance I might have been up the creek. Don't wait. It beats losing everything!

If the laws of the state require insurance, and you don't have insurance, then yes. It doesn't matter if someone else has insurance. If you're not covered, you're not covered.
