A few I've enjoyed:
MARLEY AND ME about a family and their dog. Very funny and sad at the end.
THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN after dying an old man meets five people that had something to do with his life.
TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE about a young man who meets with an old teacher before the old man dies.
A couple of my favorites when growing up were:
MR. POPPERS PENGUINS about a man who receives penguins from a man he admires.
and...
SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL 30 stories, I believe, about a class at Wayside. Very funny. Haven't read since I was in 5th grade and miss it alot.

1) "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time" by Mark Haddon -- Caution: has adult language - not for students - for personal reading (About an autistic child's view of the world)
2) "Endymion Spring" by Matthew Skelton - It's definitely a "young adult" book, simplistic, but good story if you're a Potter-type fan.

It depends on what kind of stories you like. Some of my students' favorites include "Tears of a Tiger" by Sharon Draper (as well as her other works), mystery/suspense books by Lois Duncan, and realistic fiction by Walter Dean Myers. Of course, there are so many great books out there--you just have to check them out and pick one!
