Present casualties are hidden from view and figures hidden, a war pension is at most £100 a week, meaning most of us disabled vets live beneath the poverty line, and the Britsh legion only exists because of the poor pensions. Why should we veterans rely on charity? It does not help our pride.

It's not better here in the United States. I was retired on a medical from the US Military with 40% disability and full pension and benefits. 4 1/2 years later they "re-evaluated me and even though the condition for which I was retired does NOT improve and the military doctor who re-evaluated me recommended that I remain on the disability list and be moved to permanent status.

Well the military board decided that I was only 10% disabled now, "unfit for duty" so that I couldn't return and do my last two years, and pulled my pension and all benefits. They sent me to see the Veterans Administration and cut me a check for 67,000 dollars "severance pay" (minus taxes of 20 something percent).

The VA give me a "disability payment" but since they are required by law to recoup any military pay received I don't get the VA pension until they WOULD have paid me that 67,000 dollars. So here I am with a 260 a month pension (because the VA is paying me on one disability condition for which the military paid nothing) and "free medical" which basically consists of an annual visit to say hi to the doctor and bottle of motrin.

Yup, doesn't matter where you are, the veterans that make th sacrifices get the shaft while the freeloaders get handed a free ride, food, housing........it's a bit bass ackwards isn't it?

Because soldiers are mere pawns in the International game of politics. If the army was drawn from the landed gentry exclusively, you would see all sorts of benefits and cushy after care. I don't think the government gives a damn about poor soldiers. After all they are only willing to sacrifice their life for the country. Now if they sat behind a desk drawing up the plans - that would be a different matter.

We're the mugs for letting our government do it. Stop all recruitment till the government gets real and make sure the young people know how the government really looks after its soldiers!

It's shameful, but all British Governments have treated disabled x-service men badly. It gives me the impression that they regard disabled people as 'no longer fit for purpose'& just discard them. When a soldier is killed in action, you get a Govt. minister giving an interview, putting on a long face & trying to look sincere, but they don't give a monkey's fu*k.

Its disgusting isn't it? Trust me, as a disabled person, Britain treats all her disabled in the same way. Have been battling for Disability Living Allowance for a year now, been to appeal twice, if I do get it, they owe me bucks, but its really unlikely, despite the fact they were paying it to me for two years and stopped without any reason whatsoever, even though my condition has worsened. I am now largeley housebound, often bedbound, I get £80, for me, and my daughter. Makes me wonder why I ever pain NI.

The United Kingdom takes her lead from the citizens of America. Turn your head and look the other way. Save funds to be spent on illegal alians instead of those who serve the Nation.

I hope that this is not true. I am from the USA but I have had the privilege to serve with British soldiers, sailors and marines and consider them brothers. I will contact men I have served with to see if this is true.
