Because the idea of a God that loves you and yet would watch you suffer for all eternity is ridiculous. "I love you, so I'm going to provide you with a bunch of inconsistent, often ridiculous scriptures that contradict common sense and offers no proof of my existence, besides telling you to believe, and if that old book and a bunch of people with blind faith don't convince you, well then you get to be subjected to excruciating pain forever." How reasonable the great lord is.
Plus nothing in the original texts provides such a gruesome image of hell, that all started around the time of the Divine Comedy (Dante's Inferno). Besides all that it is way too obviously a humanidea. No all powerful God would be as flawed or so vengeful, only a human would conceive the "follow me or be damned for eternity" idea. A way to make people feel better about busting their asses to be good people while others coast by on sinful clouds of joy. This makes me feel very safe from any hell, anyone else?

Oh yeah, I'm an atheist, I guess that's another big part of why it doesn't concern me too much.

icarus60 (or another number, sorry) I love the question you gave a link to. That was basically part of my point but I didn't elaborate as well, sometimes I make the mistake of assuming that people will make the obvious connections and see the point I'm making. Others should read that question.

Gary, thanks for the input from the Bible but there have been scoffers and heatens like me for a long time, there is no end time. And I'm not trying to make myself more secure, I just want to see if anyone else followed my same train of thought. And I don't really walk in my own lust or whatever that said, I follow some buddhist principles and reject materialism and lust in general. I guess not all us heatens are too bad. Good luck.

Obviously gods are a human invention and all the claims and dogma surrounding them are exactly what you'd expect humans to invent, including the idea of everlasting torture. See my earlier question in the same vein.

Here's the thing those "ideas" about hell that the artist put into their work, are described in the Koran which is a book (read it ) that reads just like it has the same author as the Bible, and claims to be of the same origine and the reason given for this further revelation rings true with mans perversion of the message by organized religion. Check you history it is all there. I am not saying what we have in the Bible is not inspired but that man conspired to limit what is in there for obvous reasons I personally do not agree with. Just the same everything you need for salvation is in there. Ask yourself saved from what. Every one wants to pick love or judgement but can not grasp both at the same time. They are both in scripture if part of scripture is false which part is it. It is either a credible work or it is not. OI believe it is credible, and so then is whaling and knashing of teeth fun?/ Does residing in a lake of fire sound so lovee dovee.
Check out the stories offered by people who were evil died and were brought back. What they describe sounds like the entrance to the Hell pictured. Would heaven be a nice place if all this same bunch was all there. I do not think all these "believe as I do or be Damned" people are giving an accurate picture but that one you are presenting seems pretty uninspired to me.

I'm not worried about hell because I know Jesus as my Savior...
However, I can understand how scoffers like yourself would try to convince people there is no hell.
If i were in your shoes I'd certainly be trying to convince God also!
By the way, here are some wonderful Scriptures that you have again proven to be true:
"Knowing this, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts..."
(2 Peter 3:3)
" Now the Spirit speaks expressly that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy..."(1Tim.4:1
BEING IN DENIAL ABOUT HELL DOESN'T MAKE IT GO AWAY.

I believe in God, but I am not one bit afraid of hell -- because I dont believe it exists. There are a growing number of Christians who follow the teachings of Jesus, but do not believe in hell -- heres why: 1) Because the concept of eternal torment was never found in the original languages of the Bible, it was added in later by translators. 2) Because a just God will give each person a just amount of discipline for their wrongdoing, just like a father will discipline his children, not for the purpose of vengefully destroying them, but lovingly correcting them. A loving father would never invent eternal torment for any his children. To read more on the subject check out these websites:

that's why i'm pagan and not christian.
there are plenty of other religions out there that do not follow that book. take a look around and find one that suits u better.
i personally couldn't get into a testosterone-laden pissing contest between god, who supposedly already knows the outcome of the contest, and a fallen angel just to see who could collect the most souls by the end of time. (that and a few other things, including eternal punishment of a 'child' for bad acts; seems humans are more loving than the christian god is, so i had some issues lol)

i'm no longer worried. Hell is technically no longer dis-shown, so that is nevertheless technically a danger. yet in conserving with all data, that is totally not likely to exist. So i'm no longer worried. i'm certain you are able to imagine a a lot worse state of affairs than hell and it ought to technically no longer be dis-shown. Is that any reason to fret nonetheless?

Actually hell is described many times in the Bible; described in detail in Luke 16:19-31 ! That very passage will illustrate to you the futility of what you posted.....
God loves mankind indeed. But the problem is most of mankind doesnt love him back but reject him. My pets are always going to be welcome in my house unless they dont respect me, listen to me, follow my rules, or attack me. If my own pets that I have provided for have the rotten heart enough to reject me until they day they die, their punihsment is well earned and deserved! In that way, they were never mine begin with......
So it is with God. We are Gods creation, not all his children. The people that humble themselves will be Gods children and get his blessing. The people that did the will of Gods enemy and rejected him will receive the penalty of Gods enemy; hell.

You stated the position pretty well. The idea of a loving god condemning persons to eternal torment just doesn't work. It reeks of Bronze age propaganda meant to scare people from considering other religions as equally valid.

So don't believe it.
11Let him that does unrighteously do unrighteously still; and let the filthy make himself filthy still; and let him that is righteous practice righteousness still; and he that is holy, let him be sanctified still.
12Behold, I come quickly, and my reward with me, to render to every one as his work shall be.
13*I* [am] the Alpha and the Omega, [the] first and [the] last, the beginning and the end.
14Blessed [are] they that wash their robes, that they may have right to the tree of life, and that they should go in by the gates into the city.
15Without [are] the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loves and makes a lie.
16*I* Jesus have sent mine angel to testify these things to you in the assemblies. *I* am the root and offspring of David, the bright [and] morning star.
17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is athirst come; he that will, let him take [the] water of life freely.
