i have had 2 really placid, mild-mannered boyfriends who, when i have ended the relationship, have turned completely psycho on me + become manipulative, aggressive, downright abusive and scary. but they never showed any signs of having this side to their personality before. it has made me bitter +afraid to get involved again. because if things don't work out i don't want to go through all that torment again

Sounds like you could do with some support. Why not contact your local Women's Aid who can give you some support on signs to look out for in abusive men or take a look at www.freedomprogramme.co.uk - you need to know that not all men are bad & after a bad experience it can take time to feel confident in yourself again.

Theres no way of knowing how people will react until you get to know them really well and even then they can shock you, I was married for 14 years to a man who I thought was honest and caring and he turned into a lying cheating idiot so be careful out there.
