I am interested in getting into the trucking biz, I want to buy a used tractor and use it for about 6-months to a year before I get another one, I am thinking I can start of with a 98', what do u think? Also, I know a man who owns a trucking company, I would be leasing the truck to him, and I would drive it. Experienced truckers, your input is extra valuable, oh the more info about the miles on the truck or the types, would really be helpful thanks.

the insurance and permits are already in place, and the truck is more like 20 thousand with less than a million miles. and we are talking about a percentage.

I ran a trucking company and I can tell you you are NUTS! Expect several large repair bills of $3k to $7K annually Revenue is zero when the truck is in repair and make sure there are no penaltys for late loads. Tires, safety inspections, fuel taxes and maintenance will run you over $1,000 a month. You will get less than 5 MI per diesel gallon and you need to have the cash or credit to get it fixed in the middle of the dessert, you will pay plenty. Independent truckers are starving today, Truck driver can always get a job but the independents are cutting each others throat to get the loads (to pay the financing on their truck) and at current gas prices they cannot make a descent living eventually the truck defaults. 20K for a million miles is far too much (must have a new engine or it will soon).

I've been a "long haul" trucker for 25 yrs. You can't learn this biz let alone the skills you need in a few months. Can't be done. Ask this guy who your' going to lease to, is he paying you a percentage of the gross ? Fuel tax ? trailer insurance ? lumpers fees ? lay-over expense ? Or is he going to pay by the mile ? If so, will he pay,"dead-head" miles as well as loaded ? You know, just to operate a truck BEFORE you make a dime, it has to earn at the very least. $1.50 a mile ? and that's for a new truck ! Take my advise, if you want to be a trucker, go to work for JB Hunt or somebody.

Do you have a CDL or any experience. And if used for over the road (OTR) work that tractor prolly has around a million miles on it by now. Be sorta maintenance intensive.
If your not experienced, your best bet by far is to be a company driver for a couple years to get a feel for the work.
Owning your own truck is very, very, expensive.
Dads a Trucker so I know.
