If ifs and buts were candy and nuts then we'd all have a merry Christmas. Too bad it isn't true, because I'm kinda in the mood for candy...

They are classified into the same group because they both grow off of trees or vines along with olives, avocados, tomatos, and other fruits. It doesn't matter how different the species are, they are just classified as fruit because they simply dont grow in the ground like vegetables .

It's just a figure of speech. While they're both fruit, they are very different from one another. Why don't you start up your own, new figure of speech to replace the old, "like apples and lettuce" or something.

I agree with you. Apples taste just like oranges.

Hi!
It is because of the seeds... both have seeds inside that make it a fruit.
"Generally, a fleshy growth originating from a flower and carry seeds is considered a fruit. So a gourd or cucumber or pea pod is a fruit too."

What a good question.
They're both fruits...
People are put in the same group even though we aren't the exact same.

It's gotta be the exterior. Orange don't eat the peel (just use little for the zest). Apple can eat the skin.
That's gotta be it.

It is a figure of speech not an absolute distinction. Eephants and fish both have tails but that doesn't categorize them together.
