I don't think there really is a time, because each child is an individual and some mature faster than others.

But I would think you should talk to them about it when they start to become curious.

The longer you wait, the more information they will get from other sources.

Break it up into steps and talk about it regularly.

By Kindergarted/early elementary school they have noticed that boys and girls are different. Explain that it takes a man and a woman together to make a baby, and emphasize family values.

By about 5th - 7th grade they will have heard a few dirty jokes. Explain that some people use sex for the wrong reasons. Emphasize love and relationships.

By high school, they will know someone who is having sex. Explain the dangers of teenage sex, from STDs to pregnancy to reputation with others. Emphasize care and safety.

Forwarned is forarmed, when they say to talk to your children about sex they don't mean to reinforce the idea that they should be going out and doing it, You should tell them all the repercussions as well, std's, pregnancy, for boys you can tell them how much it will cost them in child support. They need to know about safe sex in case it does happen. If they are educated, they can at least make an educated decision, and not go in blindfolded and not know.

My son asked was "sexual relations" were. He is 8 and I gave him a very condensed version of what it was.... BTW- he got the term out of the Bible. If they are old enough to ask- they are old enough to get the answers.
