there are several possibilities, but a very likely cause is tmj dysfunction, something that affects your jaw. if enough swelling is in that joint, it will create swelling in the ears and tinitus is one of the results. other symptoms: phantom ear aches, neck pain, neck cramps (like when yawning, the muscles will spasm or pull), popping/clicking in the jaw.

treatment for tmj depends on the severity of it and the initial cause.

other things that can cause tinitus include high or very low blood pressure (which should be checked and monitored by a physician), and inner ear infections.

I have had tinnitus since I was about 12 yrs old...I got it from firing rifles and shotguns while hunting. I further damaged my ears by loud engines, aircraft rivet guns, and other on the job ear damage. You may have gotten it from listening to boom boxes and high voluming music etc.

there is no cure...and it gets worse with age. I am 68 now and when I am tired my ears scream with a continuous high pitched noise. when I am not tired it is less loud but it is there all the time.

Unfortunately, hearing aids do not help much either. I am sorry to be a barer of not too pleasent news, but maybe if you protect your hearing by using earplugs etc it won't get much worse. Let this be a warning to other young people, ear (hearing) damage is no fun it makes you want to scream at times because of the noise...so turn down your loud music etc or you will suffer later on.

My right ear started ringing about 27 yrs ago and gradually over the yrs,I lost 80% of my hearing and have been told by every specialist I've ever visited that as of yet, they have no clue what to do about it. Get your butt to an E.N.T. specialist asap, maybe if it's caught in time....?
