I have a choc. lab/pit bull mix that is getting to be a year old. He is getting large and out of control. Is neutering the answer?

First off, I just want to state that I don't advocate breeding dogs, period, since there are so many currently in shelters and rescues without homes.

But I generally just wanted to get it out there that just because your dog is a mutt does not make him any less a dog than a purebred.

Regardless, he should still be neutered. ;)

Definitely neutering would be best for this dog, but he also needs training. If he's out of control neutering him won't change that, this dog sounds like he needs obedience right now before he becomes more of a problem than you want to handle.

I agree with everyone else who answered you. Neutering is only part of the problem. Its true that testosterone is building up in your pup, but obediance training is a must. Getting him neutered is essential anyway, and now is the best time. But talk to a trainer, before it gets so out of hand, that you can't handle him. And being as he's part pitt, that could very well happen. I've seen it too many times. Pitts and pitt mixes can make wonderfull pets, contrary to popular belief, but you've got to make sure that YOU and HIM have the proper training.

Neutering is only PART of the answer. The dog needs to be trained!
There are private services available, or group classes available through local kennel clubs or stores such as PetSmart. It is a good idea to get into a group class, if possible, to socialize the dog.
By the way... any dog that is not used for breeding should be spayed or neutered.

Having your dog neutered will help in some way by reducing the hormones that are starting to course through him. You may also want to look into obedience training either in a group or in private sessions.

It's a start. It's not an easy solution, but will make training easier. And *that* is what your dog needs, training.
Neutering will also completely eliminate any possibility of testicular cancer and reduce the possibility of prostate cancer, as well as the occurence of territorial behaviour, wandering (in search of a female), and any injuries due to mating, including in fights with other males. Not to say that he won't ever get in a fight with another male, just that it won't be because your dog wants to mate a female that they're fighting.
Good luck.

Obedience training is a must for larger dogs. Neutering will help calm him, but he'll still be a big puppy.

In males neutering can help curb dominance/agressive tendencies. I would try, it can't hurt. Plus it will prevent the possible mating with another dog.

You will need to follow up with basic training though, sterilization is not a cure all.

Neutering will calm him down and he'll be much easier to train without thinking about mating every second you're working with him.
But training at this age is also very important.

You should have him neutered in any case. He may be easier to control because he will not be driven by the search for females. Dogs and cats who are altered make for better pets.
