Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this? Especially ticks me off when I hear top government officials saying it...is this some alternative, acceptable pronunciation and I just don't know it?

At least two US presidents - Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush - share this annoying-and-all-too-common-habit.

If you can succeed in correcting this problem we'll all be grateful.

While you're at it, could you teach military spokespeople that a stash of weapons is a "cache" and not a "cachet" - which I'm pretty sure is something you keep in a lingerie drawer to keep it smelling pretty.

No, it isn't some alternative acceptable pronunciation, but it's the way George W. Bush says it, and it cracks me up every time I hear it. As to the government officials saying it, maybe it's a case of the Emperor's new clothes, and no one wants to tell him he's nu-ked, I mean naked.

Here in Ontario we have an ad campaign going about how nuclear power is cleaner than other energy sources, and its tag line is, "Let's be clear...about nuclear." They even add the "NU" to "CLEAR" in superimposed text to help pound the point home. It would be interesting to see what would happen if a similar campaign ran in the States--that way people who insist on pronouncing the word "nu-cu-lar" would have a new, clear perspective on the issue. There's no second U in the word.

It means the same thing doesn't it? Why do all the edumacated pukes get their panties in a bunch when somebody uses slang? We can't change the language to being fun to speak, nosiree, we gotta toe the line and speak as if were talking to the damn king? Well, guess what? We don't have a king here no matter how much GWB, or Swartzenegger followers think they deserve it.

Considering Bush's education (Andover, Yale and Harvard), he should know better.
