Most dogs want to please their owners, so a well-trained dog would probably be a much happier dog than one who's constantly being corrected. Also, a trained dog is a safer dog, both for himself and those around him, which would be bound to make him less anxious and much happier.
One thing that you said in your post does bother me, though. You said you're not being mean "unless the dog gets violent." The problem is that if the dog responds to your training with violence, then BOTH of you are out of control.
Aggression begets aggression in dog training, so if you respond with anger or violence, then the dog's level of aggression and anxiety increases, and the entire process becomes a vicious circle. At no time should a trainer ever confuse meanness or violence with controling or correcting the animal's undesirable behavior.
My suggestion is to take the dog to obedience classes and watch how professional trainers work with the animals. I suspect you're going to see a lot of happy dogs doing their best to please their owners and a good time being had by all.

My dogs are all well trained and very happy. Two of the three are working dogs (one washed out of the training program due to hip dysplasia, but is still obedience trained).
There is no reason why your dogs can't be trained and happy at the same time. Not to mention that it will make you happier when you have a dog that behaves.

A trained dog is happier because he knows where he "fits". While it's all fun and games now as your puppy grows the fun and games will most likely not be fun anymore. Dogs need to be housetrained or you will have crap and urine everywhere. Dogs need to learn not to bite or mouth people or you will need to have a good insurance policy because of the dog bite potential. Dogs need to learn respect like a child or you will have a monster on your hands. I wonder how the people at PetsMart like your untrained dog. Hopefully, you are cleaning up the mess and he is under some kind of control so that he isn't disturbing the other patrons. I see so many untrained dogs end up in shelters and in backyards unloved and untouched. The trained dogs are the ones that have the fun. They get to go places with their owners. They get to be a member of the pack. I feel sorry for your puppy and for all the people who have to put up with the mess.

There are better ways to train a dog than being mean when they are disobedient (I assume the dog isn't really 'violent', cuz that'd be a problem). On my website, I have an article about a really good training tip that helps when dogs have slight behavior problems. It's called the shaker can.
Yes, dogs are happier when they are trained. They know their place in life, they aren't worried about who the leader of the pack is (because that's you). Dogs are much calmer when they know that all direction comes from you!! Please train that dog!!

A trained dog is DEFINITELY happier! He knows what you expect and how to please you. He can go more places, and you will both enjoy walking him and being with him more. You won't have to lock him away when company comes over. And it's a lot of fun to teach him cool tricks. Dogs love to show off. My dogs go traveling and camping and kayaking with me and they love it.
There are many methods now that use positive reinforcement - not the old-style, jerk-them-and-hit-them-and rub-their-nose-in-it methods.
These are the books that I recommend to my students; you can get them on Amazon.com

A trained dog is definately a happier dog. Dogs like to know who is really in charge, they like structure. They enjoy pleasing their owners. A well trained dog gets to spend more time with the family, gets to go more fun places and is better accepted in the community. Dogs like to have "jobs" and obedience is a job to a dog. Also obedience training helps build a bond between dog/owner. Most dog behavior issues, bites, etc are caused by untrained dogs..an untrained dog is a bored dog and an undisciplined dog.

A trained dog is a more confident dog as well as a happier dog. Helps to give them more of a purpose and helps to challenge and work their brains. Also makes them a healthier dog.

training an animal gives it some of the best mental stimulation it can get! it keeps a dog physically and mentally healthy. It's like asking if kids should go to school. they don't necessarily neeeed to know what happened on the battle of bunker hill,.. but it's stimulating, and it helps them to have a fullfilling life. Because almost all training is done through positive reinforcement these days it makes it a fun way for them to think for their food. Once you see them TRYING to read you, and learning what you want them to do, it's one of the best feeling of bonding and understanding in the world!

Hmmm, if you train the dog with positive re-inforcements, you will get a better response by the training methods.
If you are aggressive to your dog, he may show aggression to you either out of fear or confusion.

train that dog. its fun for the dog (cuz it gets treats!) and its better for you cuz it won't be all jumpy or whtvr. it is DEFINATELY not miscruelty. if u want ur dog to sit its butt down in one spot and you never taught it to, well...it doesn't. then the owners get comepletely frusterated and yeah. if you didn't train it, ur sis would cave in someday.
besides, then it knows whos boss. (if it didnt' know, it would take advantage over that you don't try to stop it from whtvr its doing)
