They can threaten all the want. They can even generally get away with minor infringements, if they do it carefully.

But if they cross too far over the line, the expose themselves to civil and potentially criminal liability. Hence the old joke about the only thing a cop being afraid of is a lawyer.

Duh! read the patriot act, you probably thought the soviet union was no more. Our president G.Bush has turned the US in to another one. I mean they can come into your house and search it and take things while your not there , and they don't even have to tell you. And if they call you a terrorist they can hold you indefinitely with out any-body knowing.

They can threaten it all they want, they just can't violate it.
Remember in questioning, they are allowed to lie to you about evidence or other confessions or anything they want to trick you into telling them what they want.

They can and do. Look at the frightening rise of paramilitary raids on innocent people. Many times, innocent people are killed by these violent zealonts.
