get a heart rate monitor and do cardio in your target zone for an extended period of time, work out longer not harder. Building muscle also burns more calories.

Any exercise that will maintain your heart rate at an elevated level. That means constant motion, large movements with your large muscles.
Walking, jogging, running, swimming, dancing, step aerobics, etc. Even just walking around your living room, waving your arms around can be effetive.
The suggestion that you purchase a heart monitor is a good one. It costs very little, from your local pharmacy and is a good way to see if you are: 1. doing a good job of raising your pulse rate, and 2. Watching how fast your heart recovers to it's normal rate after you stop. The sooner it recovers can be an indication of your overall fitness.
Remember, it's not in lifting large weights. It's lifting smaller wieghts a lot of times.

Anything that gets your metabolism going...you can find all kinds of charts and lists online that tell you how many calories per hour are burned when doing a particular activity...just type 'calories burned' into your search engine (w/o the single quotes) and go from there.

Go for a half hour walk shortly after lunch. Don't wait a few hours until you hit the gym.

Anything that is weight-bearing a quick moving like running, crosscountry skiing, rowing - but what's more important is to find something you enjoy doing so you will do it regularly.
