My department is a fire rescue department, where all personnel are state certified firefighters and also state certified EMT's or Paramedic's. The county gets more bang for their buck. However, it depends on the call type. If it is a simple fall then just the ambulance responds, but if it is cardiac, difficulty breathing, unresponsive or motor vehicle accident then an ambulance and a fire truck responds. If you are having a heart attack then the more trained personnel to help the better. Also we have fire trucks that are equipped with Advanced Life Support equipment so if the ambulance in our zone is on another call and an ambulance has to come from another station that is further away, our fire truck responds and we can initiate care, sometimes life saving care, until the ambulance arrives to transport the patient to the hospital. My crew and I on the fire truck were 10 minutes closer to a cardiac arrest, since the ambulance at my station was on a call, we arrived on scene and began patient care, which CPR was being done, we were able to use our equipment on the fire truck to get a pulse back and the ambulance just had to transport the patient to the hospital. The lady had some medical issues but she got of the hospital and is living her life. That 10 minutes were the difference between life and death.

Well let me tell you why....I am a paramedic so here is some first hand knowledge. The fire department usually shows up first because they are closer. The ambulance that is closet to you is busy with someone else. The ambulance will make at least 10 medical calls to every 1 actual fire call. The fireman are EMS certified, and usually can do the same as the ambulanace except for transport. There is so much abuse to the 911 system, it is unbeleivable. Most abusers use the ambulance for a taxi service.

often ambulances are dispatched from the local fire department. I live in a small town - no hospital but we do have paramedics and an ambulance that is dispatched from the fire station in our town. they come and stabalize the situation until the ambulance from the hospital in hte adjacent city can get here . It might just depend on who gets there the fastest. Often firefighters are trained in paramedics and if they can get to the scene faster than the regular ambulance , they go to keep things stable and help out until other medical personnel can get to the scene and bring the patient where they need to go.

Ambulances are stationed at hospitals (in general). Fire departments are spread out all over the city.

probably depends on where you live... for example, I'm from a small town and we had fire trucks available, but ambulances would take an hour to get there from the next town over. also, there might be more fire trucks available than ambulances on any given day. after all, there are a lot more sick people than there are fires.

The fire truck is equiped with basic life saving equipment and they are also trained with basic life saving skills, they can also clear the path with the huge truck for the ambulance. Depending on the call ambulance, fire truck and police respond.

Because many (I believe all actually) firemen are trained in cpr, and more life saving procedures and many are certified EMT's. It takes ambulances a while longer to get to the scene because there aren't as many ambulances out there (as they are mostly independent companies that are contracted out through Emergency Services). I would not be alarmed if the firefighters came first...trust me, they are just as skilled and know what they are doing, and know many lifesaving techniques (and besides it's better them than no one..)

the local first responders are suppose to be nearby people who get the calls with the rescue squads and firedepartments to be on the scene of an accident or sudden illness as soon as possible and sometimes these people though ordinary citizens are the difference between life and death

All departments are sent .... Fire department has more resources for major issues that may pop up. 911 can't decide or let you decide who should come. Let alone first
Alway smile at Fire Department personnel .... They the Best!
