We are planning on being there for about 2 weeks and going to Florence / Pisa / Rome / Vatican City / Naples / Capri / Sorrento / Pompeii. We are planning on taking trains between the cities (some are only going to be day trips). Is the weather nice in April? She is very into art, architecture, ruins, and food so I know she will get a lot out of this trip (the location was her choice). Any "must do" sites within these cities? Any suggestion about traveling with a teenager in Italy? Any ideas and help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry I can't adopt any of you guys. I have my hands full with the nieces I already have. My other niece wants her 16th Bday trip to be Australia! At least I have another 4 yrs before I have to do that one.

Well, you know Italy is narrow and long, so the weather changes depending on where you are. In Milan you have a totally different weather than in Rome.

Generally speaking, in April the weather in normally fine where you want to go, may be some shower in Rome.

Pisa is one hour by train from Florence, the town in quite small, you can visit it in one day. Florence needs at least two days to be visited.
No special problem about travelling with a teenager, but be careful in big towns as Rome and specially Naples, as you would be in big towns in the US.
Specially in Naples look out for where you choose the hotel.

I don't think you will have a hard time finding something to do! There are so many wonderful places to see and thing to do. Since you only have a short time I would suggest you narrow down the cities to three. Otherwise most of your vacation will be spent on trains, busses, restaurants, and sleep. Have a Flexible plan, pick three "must see" in each city. Remember there are lots of tourists in Italy. Lines are long, so be early. Most important thing to remember is to relax! If you really like Venice, spend an extra day there. You can see Pisa next time you go back. =) You and your niece are going to love it!
Good luck.

Your niece is a VERY lucky girl!
April is unpredictable, weather-wise, but nice, especially since it is less crowded and not as hot, which can be depleting when traveling.
Just take your time and enjoy what shows up in front of you.
Italy brings its own surprises wherever you go, whatever you do.
Some of the best experiences are the unplanned ones.
Buon Viaggio.

I went to Europe when I was 16. As for the weather, it was early July and the weather was pretty mild, but we were in Germany, France, London, etc. so I'm not sure how italy differs.

As for some suggestions, I say that you REALLY should avoid anything American. If she gets homesick, offer her a burger, but my friends and I spent a lot of time at stores like H&M and american-like restaurants and I was always upset that they didn't want to be more immersed in the culture.
