Descartes wrote a book called Candide in which he denounced this view of the world, others believe steadfastly that everything does indeed happen for the best, what do you think?

Top book Candide. Sound philosipher oul Descartes. You should have a go at Aquinas.

I genuinely believe that 'happenings' are random and therefore we make our own luck.

Think of the volcano arguement. An eruption may be disastorous to the people killed in its wake but without the riches of the land produced by the volcano then the people would nt survive as well in the first place. Hmmmmmmm.

I really think that everything happens for a reason, if you keep a diary or journal to check your life you will see that things do happen for a reason and for the best. Don't be confused by the overload of information that people put on the market. Your life is your journey study it, get to know it and life it.
Try a book called the Celestine Prophecy or www.celestinevision.com.. It will put you on the right road to your answer.

Sometimes its very hard for us to see it at the time but yes, everything from big to small is for the best. If you backtrack your steps in life you can see that all those bad things brought you to where you are today!! Some of those bad things that happened were meant to make you grow and become a better person. If nothing ever bad happened one would become dull and simple and most likely very unhappy!!

Most painful and bad things usually lead to very good things in the long run if treated the right way!!

Yeh I think so, I believe that if you are forced to take a different path then you planned it'll work out better.... then again how would you know what life would've been like had your plans been kept? I think life is sweet, no matter what.
However my whole family hasn't just died, I haven't found out I'm pregnant with a rapists child, I'm not terminally ill, how can I have an unbiased opinion?!

Renee Descartes walked into a bar. The barkeep asked, "Would you like a beer?" Descartes replied, "I think not," and promptly disappeared.

And no, I don't think it happens for the best or for the worst, it happens the only way it can.

Voltaire wrote Candide, not Descartes.

No, I don't think everything happens for the best. What could be good about someone getting cancer, being abused, or dying in a fire. It seems when bad things happen, someone also says there's a reason for everything but I don't see the reason or good in any of this.

no and i say this on behalf of the Innocent little children that where thrown like trash into hitlers ovens during WWII
over 1000000 children gassed in gas chambers then thrown in ovens in hitlers death camps
Quote wikkipedia
{The Holocaust was carried out without any reprieve even for children or babies, and victims were often tortured before being killed. Nazis carried out deadly medical experiments on prisoners, including children. Dr. Josef Mengele, medical officer at Auschwitz and chief medical officer at Birkenau, was known as the "Angel of Death" for his medical and eugenical experiments, e.g., trying to change people's eye color by injecting dye into their eyes. Aribert Heim, another doctor who worked at Mauthausen, was known as "Doctor Death".}

others where sexualy and physical torured by there guards then they were killed
the irony in this was that these where gods chosen people and god sat and watched this happen many yrs
there was absolutely no good in this
and to try to say there was some good in this pure selfishness

no not everything i dont think rape has a "best" to it. you could argue that these are trials by god, testing faith, or in th end helping you to become religious. but as for the "best" no not everything. (or child abuse? how is there best to that? isnt there a statistic that if abused as a child you end up growing up to do the same, like alcoholics and such? ps. im not saying that jsut cause u are means u will i mean its a statistic that many people do).

No, sh*t just happens. A lot of things that happen are by chance and you're left to decide what to do with the cards you're dealt.

Not one bit of it has anything to do with an invisible man up in the sky with super powers.
