The ratio depends on a lot of things. In Washington State the ratio is determined by contract between the provider and the agency funding the program. It is also determined based on the level of service required. For example aged folks with Alzheimers and Dementia require more care and support so the ratio of staff to resident would be higher.

It also depends on what kind of program is providing services. For example Adult family homes generally have a 5-6 residents to 1 staff ratio. Supported Living programs are usually 3 residents to 2 staff.

Nursing homes depend on the contract and also on the quality of the home. For example upscale nursing homes have doctors and nurses on site and have direct care staff at a 2:1 ratio. Others have doctors and nurses on call but not on site and have direct care staff at a 5:1 ratio. Others even higher ratios 10:1, 14:2 etc...

It really makes sense to do the research before you place a family member in one of these places. If you are interested in working in a facility like this I suggest you get your nursing degree because the nurses are paid pretty well but the direct care staff are paid close to minimum wage and are barely trained.

Also, employment conditions are better at the more upscale facilities.

Hope this helps.
